Vrijdag 29 apr. 2016: Two Palestinian Poets

Met: Ghayath Almadhoun, Asmaa Azaizeh, Matthijs Ponte & Rasha Hilwi

An evening on Palestinian poetry with Ghayath Almadhoun, Asmaa Azaizeh and Rasha Hilwi, in co-production with Read My World. During this evening Ghayath Almadhoun and Asmaa Azaizeh will read from their work and engage in a discussion moderated by Matthijs Ponte. In addition to this, Rasha Hilwi will give a lecture mapping the present poetry scene in Palestine. 

Asmaa Azaizeh is a journalist, radio maker and poet. In 2013 she is the guest curator of the first edition of the international literature festival Read My World in Amsterdam. Her poetry has been translated into English, German, Persian, and Hebrew.
Ghayath Almadhoun is a Palestinian poet and journalist. He was born in the Palestinian refugee camp Yarmouk in Damascus. He studied Arabic Literature at the University of Damascus and worked as a journalist. In 2006, together with Likman Derky he founded ‘Bayt al-Qasid’, the ‘House of Poetry’, in the Syrian capital. A selection of his work has been published at Uitgeverij Maas, in a Dutch translation by Djûke Poppinga, with the title Weg van Damascus. His poetry has been translated to Swedish, Italian, Greek and Slovenian.
Rasha Hilwi is a writer, journalist and blogger. She writes about art and culture in major Arab newspapers, online media and cultural platforms. She is one of the editors in chief for Fus-ha, a Palestinian Cultural Online Magazine. Also, she is the media coordinator for the Work of Art project at The Arab Culture Association in Haifa. Since 2007, she has been publishing on her own blog Zaghroda. Her writing is translated into English, Spanish, Greek, Indonesian, Polish and Bulgarian.
Matthijs Ponte is a poet and philosopher. He is co-founder of the international literature festival Read My World. As publisher and co-founder, he is one of the initiators of the new publishing house Bananafish.

This programme has been established in collaboration with Read My World, and is made possible by Bozar, where Almadhoun and Azaizeh will perform on the 26th of April.
