Vrijdag 11 dec. 2015: To witness matter

Met: Rozalie Hirs, Baha Görkem Yalim, Patricia Pisters, Mia You & Etel Adnan’s poetry/prose

Programme in English

This evening will delve into structures of remembrance: it will ask how memory and matter relate. We will investigate how the mechanism of memory is not necessarily tied to the psychological conditions of a subject, but rather insists on complex ecologies of consciousness, including objects. How can there be memory for several, for the world, throughout history?

An installation by Turkish artist Baha Görkem Yalim will reconfigure the space, foregrounding how things gather and communicate. Objects from the Perdu storage will be put into dialogue with other materials; amongst others, prints of Etel Adnan’s paintings in multifold, grids coalescing and wooden sticks suspending in mid-air. All create lines that could suggest certain forms or could be weaponised in revolutionary hands.

The configured space will allow a number of performances to come together into one processual work in which affinities, coincidences and repetitions will form with and around us.

Professor Patricia Pisters will open the evening with a lecture, reflecting on her latest research 'the filmmaker as metallurgist,' through which she investigates the material strategies that political filmmakers have adopted, bending our memories and historical consciousness. After, video works by Baha Görkem Yalim will be shown: they converge in their attempt to look at objects again, differently and intimately. Poet Mia You will recite selections of Etel Adnan’s novel Paris, When It’s Naked (1993). The evening will end with recitals of Etel Adnan’s poetry, taken from Seasons (2008) and Sea and Fog (2012). These final recitals will be performed by poet and composer Rozalie Hirs, along with some of her musical compositions.
