U.S. poet Mark Nowak will deliver “From Documentary Poetry to Social Practice,” a lecture and reading in which he will present excerpts from his acclaimed volumes Shut Up Shut Down and Coal Mountain Elementary as well as discuss his ongoing project of facilitating poetry workshops with trade unions, workers centers, and progressive labor organizations. Nowak is visiting the EU to conduct poetry workshops with migrant worker organizations in Amsterdam, the Hague, and Brussels. In the U.S., he is currently organizing the country’s first Institute for Worker Writers in collaboration with the PEN American Center.
Mark Nowak, a 2010 Guggenheim fellow, is the author of Coal Mountain Elementary (Coffee House Press, 2009) and Shut Up Shut Down (Coffee House Press, 2004), a New York Times "Editor’s Choice." He designs and facilitates poetry workshops for trade unions and workers centers across the United States, European Union, and South Africa. A native of Buffalo, Mark Nowak currently directs the MFA program at Manhattanville College in Purchase, New York.
